My professional training is in medical physics but I’m fully occupied
with this business of living. I’m at the stage in my life where I feel
it’s okay to try many things, and fail at some, so I can move right
along to winning some. In the day time I work with Publicis Ghana as a
copywriter. Which means that I get paid to come up with ideas to
persuade people. Sometimes I write ads for tv, radio and other media.
It’s a lot of fun. At night, I write one of the most popular Ghana
blogs: www.maameous.blogspot.com. In the past year, I’ve co-founded 2
businesses – Nkosoo Farms, a snail farm up in the mountains at Aburi,
and AfroChic Limited, a clothing manufacturing business, both of which
I’m very excited about. If I’m not free-lance writing for screen or
tinkering with projects like www.nududu.com an African recipe and
restaurant listing website, you may find me walking the full breadth
of Accra. The problem is that I have too much energy.
I’m part of YE,A because of a selfish desire to right wrongs in
communities like the one I grew up in. I grew up in what is largely a
squatter community. People do not usually come out of there to become
successful entrepreneurs or professionals. Most do not get an
education beyond high school. And so even though some of the kids I
grew up with were bright and hardworking, they were crippled by their
inability to harness their talents. I believe in the power of guidance
and role models and so I think that with the right guidance, such kids
can solve the problems that affect their communities. It turns out
that 3 out of the 18 YE,A finalists this year live at Ashale-Botwe…the
same place I grew up. So first, YEA gives me the chance to directly
act as a role model to these kids, and to make them see that people
from such communities at Ashale-Botwe too can be whatever they want to
be. Second, as the YEA projects will be based in these communities, it
gives me a chance to be part of an effort that may directly solve
problems there. Third, I just get a kick out of it |
